Build a Simple Fireplace with Stone
Outdoor
fireplaces built with stone give a rustic look
to any backyard. With careful planning, they are
easy to build and if a source for rock is found
can also be inexpensive.
The need
for concrete or mortar is dependant upon how
flat the stones are.
The stones in an outdoor fireplace need to be at
least two inches thick and as flat as possible.
Thicker stone is preferred for use at the base
and lower levels. Length can be varied, as this
will give the fireplace additional charm. A good
general length is between twelve and thirty six
inches. The width of the stone should be at
least one foot across.
Begin this project by determining what size the
fireplace will be. A good size to start is two
foot by three foot. Lay out the footprint of the
fireplace using landscape chalk. If this looks
like an appropriate size, make additional lines
one foot away from the footprint lines. If not,
redraw the footprint either larger or smaller as
needed.
The next step is to remove all sod and/or plants
from the immediate area. Use the outside lines
you have drawn with the chalk as a guide.
Once the area is clear with nothing remaining
but clear dirt, redraw the fireplace footprint.
Begin laying in the stones around the perimeter
of the fireplace. Use the thicker, heavier
stones as the base. Complete one row around the
entire diameter, before beginning the next.
When the fireplace has reached the chosen
height, you can decide if you wish to add a
chimney. If a chimney is desired, you will need
a sheet of ¾” steel plate that will cover
approximately one third of the fireplace
opening. Lay the steel plate over the back half
of the fireplace, leaving a two inch gap from
the inside of the stone to the edge of the
plate.
Begin the chimney by stacking smaller stone
across the steel plate, keeping in mind not to
allow the stone to block the two inch flue area.
Continue the stone around the back of the
fireplace. Carefully add stone to the chimney
until complete.
For added stability, concrete or mortar can be
used between the layers of stone. Follow the
instructions on the bag and be sure to allow
curing time before using the fireplace.
An outdoor fireplace can be a wonderful addition
to any backyard. A few simple sticks and a bag
of marshmallows will bring a smile to both young
and old as you sit around the fire.
